This duo exhibition brings together Peter Krauskopf and Katharina Stadler, two German artists from different generations whose practices converge around abstraction as a material and temporal process. Rather than proposing a thematic synthesis, the exhibition stages a dialogue between distinct modes of working through the surface—one grounded in painterly accumulation and erosion, the other in structural intervention and reassembly.
Krauskopf’s paintings articulate abstraction as a durational field. Built through successive layers of oil paint, dragged, compressed, and partially erased, his surfaces register time as a material condition. The canvas functions as a site of sedimentation, where colour is tested through pressure, viscosity, and repetition. His use of tools that displace the hand situates the work within a post-war European discourse on abstraction, resonating with the analytical strategies of painters such as Gerhard Richterand Bernard Frize, while maintaining a distinctly intuitive and process-driven logic.
Stadler approaches abstraction from an inverse yet complementary position. Her works are constructed through acts of cutting, stitching, and reassembling painted canvas and textile elements. Seams, overlaps, and joins remain visible, emphasizing painting as an object rather than an image. Destruction becomes a prerequisite for reconstruction. Colour is held within structure, distributed across breaks and intervals rather than applied across a continuous field. Her practice aligns with a lineage in which textile and painting intersect as systems of knowledge and material reasoning, recalling figures such as Teresa Lanceta and, more contemporarily, artists who expand painterly logic through weaving and fabrication.
The intersection between the two practices lies in their shared commitment to colour as an analytical instrument rather than an expressive device. In this respect, the exhibition resonates with a broader historical arc—from Bauhaus pedagogies of perception, notably Anni Albers, to post-minimal and contemporary practices that treat repetition, restraint, and variation as modes of thinking. A quieter point of reference can also be found in the meditative chromatic discipline of Agnes Martin, where slowness and attentiveness structure both making and viewing.
Within the spatial context of Buysse Gallery, the exhibition favors silence, negative space, and measured intervals. Works are not arranged to assert equivalence or contrast, but to establish a perceptual rhythm. Krauskopf’s paintings anchor the space through chromatic density and depth, while Stadler’s constructed surfaces introduce moments of interruption and structural awareness. The viewer is invited to move slowly between these registers, attentive to how colour unfolds across different material logics.
Rather than offering a resolved narrative, the exhibition foregrounds dialogue, friction, and echo. It positions abstraction not as a closed historical category, but as an ongoing negotiation between material, process, and time—one that continues to unfold through distinct yet resonant practices.

In kurzen, senkrechten Streifen wechseln sich ein leuchtendes Pink und ein strahlendes Violett mit verschiedenen Grüntonen ab und bilden ein längliches horizontales Band. Die Versatzstücke in Katharina Stadlers großformatiger Arbeit Play 2014 wirken für sich wie Ausschnitte aus einem ungewöhnlich gefärbten Regenbogen oder einem bunten Strichcode. Jedes Farbfeld ist individuell von der Malerin auf den Stoff aufgetragen, es gibt Überlappungen und kleine Leerstellen, die den Betrachtenden deutlich machen wollen, dass sie von menschlicher Hand geschaffen sind, dass es hier nicht um saubere, gerade Linien geht. Katharina Stadler schichtet mehrere dieser gestreiften Stoffbänder übereinander und führt sie mit schiefen, manchmal geradezu kurvigen Nähten zusammen; ein physischer Akt, der die Objekthaftigkeit des sogenannten Bildträgers vor Augen führt. Die versetzt vernähten Farbflächen formen ein eigenwilliges Muster, das fast ein bisschen zu wanken scheint und an eine Verwacklung denken lässt - pinke und violette Wege, die im Grün hin- und herspringen. Ertappt fühlt man sich fast, wenn man bemerkt, dass das eigene Gehirn immer wieder die vermeintliche Perfektion sucht. Fast tröstlich erscheint es da, dass es einen Textilrahmen gibt, mit dem die Künstlerin ihre Farbfelder einnäht und so auf einfühlsame Weise zu bändigen scheint, eine Balance zwischen Ordnung und Irritation schafft.
Mit ihrem Titel Thinking about Feeling verweist Katharina Stadler auf die oft ganz selbstverständlich erscheinende Dualität der zwei wohl komplexesten und in ihrer Erschließung herausforderndsten Fähigkeiten des Menschen: dem Denken und dem Fühlen, Kopf und Bauch. Vermeintlich steht das Gefühl dabei für das Chaotische, Unberechenbare, das Denken wiederum wird meist mit dem Gegenteil verbunden. Aber stimmt das auch?
Zur Sichtbarmachung ihrer Erfahrungen, Erinnerungen und Überlegungen findet die Künstlerin in Farben, Silhouetten und neuerdings immer wieder auch in gestischen Strichen ihre Ausdrucksmittel – Form follows Feeling. Die Grenzen des unterbewusst Entstandenen hin zum absichtsvoll Gelenkten scheinen dabei zu verschwimmen. Gefühl und Gedanke, so wirkt es, manifestieren sich und bilden ein gemeinsames, dynamisches Ganzes. Farbflächen und Pinselspuren verflechten, durchdringen und überlagern sich, hören in einem Bildteil auf, nur um im nächsten oder übernächsten noch einmal anders zu beginnen. Der intuitive Tanz der Farben erstreckt sich in Werken wie Poor Pigeon oder Watching the Sky Fall Apart über große Bildpartien. Der Rahmen aber bleibt, hüllt das lebendige, oft vielteilige Innere ein wie eine zähmende und schützende Hautschicht.
Ohne den eigentlichen Hintergrund zu kennen, erhalten die Betrachtenden durch die Farbgebung und Pinselführung der abstrakt bemalten Stoffstücke ein Gefühl für die Stimmungen, emotionalen Aufladungen und gedanklichen Regungen, die sich in den Bildern spiegeln. Mal mehr, mal weniger entsteht durch Schattierungen, Kontraste und Flächen ein Bildraum mit einer spezifischen Tiefe, die zur Kontemplation einlädt. Mit symbolischem Potential fordern die Werke zum Nachdenken über Grenzen und Endlichkeiten auf. Immer wieder kann man dabei neu beginnen, ohne das bereits Erkannte verwerfen zu müssen.

"Short vertical stripes alternate between bright pink and radiant violet with various shades of green, forming an elongated horizontal band. The set pieces in Katharina Stadler's
large-format work Play 2014 appear to be excerpts from an unusually colored rainbow or a colorful barcode. Each color field is individually applied to the fabric by the painter, there are overlaps and small gaps that make it clear to the viewer that they were created by human hands, that this is not about clean, straight lines. Katharina Stadler layers several of these striped fabric bands on top of each other and joins them with crooked, sometimes downright curvy seams; a physical act that highlights the object character of the so-called image carrier.
The offset sewn color areas form an idiosyncratic pattern that seems to waver slightly, reminiscent of camera shake—pink and purple paths that jump back and forth in the green. One almost feels caught when one notices that the own brain is constantly searching for supposed perfection. It seems comforting that there is a textile frame with which the artist sews her color fields, seeming to tame them in a sensitive way, creating a balance between order and irritation.
With her title Thinking about Feeling, Katharina Stadler refers to the often seemingly self-evident duality of what are probably the two most complex and challenging human abilities to understand: thinking and feeling, head and gut. Supposedly, feeling stands for the chaotic and unpredictable, while thinking is usually associated with the opposite. But is that really true?
To visualize her experiences, memories, and reflections, the artist finds her means of expression in colors, silhouettes, and, more recently, in gestural strokes—form follows feeling. The boundaries between the subconsciously created and the intentionally directed seem to blur. Feelings and thoughts, it seems, manifest themselves and form a common, dynamic whole. Areas of color and brushstrokes intertwine, interpenetrate, and overlap, ending in one part of the picture only to begin again in a different way in the next or the one after that. The intuitive dance of colors extends across large areas of the picture in works such as Poor Pigeon or Watching the Sky Fall Apart. The frame, however, remains, enveloping the lively, often multi-part interior like a taming and protective layer of skin.
Without knowing the actual background, viewers gain a sense of the moods, emotional charges, and intellectual impulses reflected in the images through the coloring and brushwork of the abstractly painted pieces of fabric. Sometimes more, sometimes less, shades, contrasts, and surfaces create an image space with a specific depth that invites contemplation. With their symbolic potential, the works encourage a reflection on boundaries and finiteness. Again and again, one can start this anew without having to discard what has already been recognized."
